Speaker 1: We started this office back in 2007. I felt like I was reinventing the wheel. It's just like, man, there's other guys who've been successful out there, I got to find those people. So I started doing some homework, just trying to find who's out there that can coach me in a sense? Who's out there that can help, that's already invented a great dental office, who's created a great dental office? Who's out there?
And we just by chance happened to come across a lecture by Dr. Abernathy, who's obviously one of the founders of Summit. And I was actually working, and I sent Dr. Amanda. I said, "Honey, will you please go and listen to his lecture?" And she did. And she's like, "[Rol 00:01:04], you missed out on a good lecture here." And I was like, "Oh, crud." But she said, "Never fear. They're going to send you, if you want it, they're going to send you their lecture." And so I'm like, "Send it to me, send it to me."
So I got it. It was like a six to eight hour lecture on two CDs. I popped it in, and I sat there and watched the whole thing from start to finish. And when I heard Dr. Abernathy speaking about his dental offices and his visions for his dental office, he was saying the exact same things that I was thinking, the exact same things that I wanted, and how I approach things. And so it was almost like it was luck, fate, what have you.
Yeah, so we picked up with Summit in November of 2009 is the first time that they came out to our office. And they took a look around, and it was John [Ruddy 00:02:21], and he came and he took a look around, and he obviously told me what I already knew, we needed some work.
And so I was all excited. I'm like, "How many times can you be here?" And he's like, "No, no, no, once a month is going to be fine." And once a month was fine because there was just so much stuff that we needed to do. There was just so many things, and time just moves so fast. It's like, "Oh, he's back again," and it's a month later. It's like, "Okay, what did we accomplish here?"
And so we have seen dramatic results. It's taken time. It's taken time. It's taken a heck of a lot of effort. It's taken some tears, a little bit of blood, and a ton of sweat. And like we had talked about before, Dr. Amanda and I had gotten married about four months after we started this place. So you can imagine what we were going through trying to work with Summit and work on our own relationship and our marriage. So yeah, it was a very interesting experience.
When they first came in here, I mean, the two of us, so our combined practice, we were seeing about 15 new patients a month maybe. Now obviously, we're seeing about 150 new patients per month. I mean, we've often seen more than 150 new patients per month. And that's been consistent now pretty much since the middle of 2012. So the middle of 2010, we're around 50, seeing 50 new patients per month. 2011, we're up to 75, 85 new patients per month. And then obviously, then it just started to snowball to the point where we're getting... We had never had this problem until this past year. It's like I was open on a Saturday and I had to say, "I can't see any more people today." And that's kind of a remarkable thing coming from where we were before.
We were a Medicaid, I was... Remember, this was two offices that we bought and joined together, so 99.9% of the patients that I saw were Medicaid. And Amanda was, the patients that she was seeing were fee for service. So in the middle of the middle of 2010, we had stopped with the Medicaid part of our practice. And so essentially we started a brand new practice here in this office from scratch.
So to get to that point where it's like, "I can't see any more people, I don't have enough bodies. I don't have enough staff to handle this, and I can't be in two places at once." So it's been a very interesting experience, has been a very rewarding experience. I can call up John and talk to him whenever I need him, and he'll get back to me. I can talk to Dr. Mike as well, and I do. So we talk a lot. He's a great sounding board. He has been a great sounding board for me.
Oftentimes we know what needs to happen. We know what needs to be done in the office. It's just really damn hard to do it. And so calling them up and saying, "Man, do I really need to do this? This is really going to be hard." It's like, "You really need to do it." It's like, "Okay, then I got to get it done."
So I don't regret for a moment ever doing it. I regret that I didn't do it sooner because, I mean, it's just been a dramatic, dramatic difference to the office. I mean, you can even ask the staff, I mean, me in 2009 in my demeanor, as opposed to now, two totally different people. So yeah, it's helped out tremendously.
Hi, my name's John Min. I'm from New Jersey. I've known Mike and Max for many, many years. The thing about Mike and Max, they're very real and they meet you... What I've found is that they meet... They met me where I was. They didn't try to change my practice, they catered to what I needed and what I wanted from them, they guided me in what I needed, they never pushed me. They're always there and the advice each step of the way has really been excellent.
Hey there, I'm Dr. Doug Forbes. I'm from Columbia, South Carolina, where I'm a general dentist. I want to talk to you today about Summit Practice Solutions. I've been very pleased with their work, using them over the past year. My income is up, my stress level is down.
Dr. Abernathy came and visited last year, helped us make a plan that we are now implementing. I was given a monthly consultant. He's very knowledgeable, works on the implementation of the plan. I couldn't say more about him. If you want to know more, call me. I'll be glad to talk to you about him. Dr. Doug Forbes, my website is GetABetterSmile.com. Thanks.

David Phelps: Hi, I'm Dr. David Phelps from Founders.com. I'm here at Woody Oaks spring Break Destin seminar with some of my really good friends, Dr. Mike Abernathy. Max Goacher, Colin Receiver. The reason we're here, is this is the place. If you're a dentist who's worried about the future, you're worried about the economy, what's going on in your practice right now? Patient flow is down, your net profit's down? This is the place to be. I want to talk particularly about my good friends, Mike Abernathy and Max Goacher with Summit Practice Management. This is Mike's new book, The Super Dental Practice. If you don't have a copy of this book, you've got to get a copy because Mike talks about everything that you need to know about dealing with today's economy. Mike, how can they get a copy of this book?
Mike Abernathy: Max, why don't you give him the website?
Max Goacher: Yeah, there's a digital copy available online. If you'll just go to our website, which is Summitpracticesolutions.com, right on the homepage there's a link there and you can download a PDF version of this book. If you're old school like most of us here are and you want a physical copy? Again, you can go to the website and just request that we send you one, and we can do that.
David Phelps: This is the book that literally helped me break the chains from being chairside. This is what did it for me. No, I'm serious, let me say, this guy helped me do it. And to read this book, you'll have everything you need to know about it.
Hi, I’m Dr. Rick Miller. I want to tell you about my experience with Summit Management. I started with them probably 20 years ago; I had just put myself through school, I had no dental knowledge before dental school, nobody in my family was a dentist and I also didn’t have any business knowledge. I started and I have been in practice, finally got my own practice, and I’ve been in my own practice for probably two to three years and it was a struggle. I was doing what I could to bring my practice along and then by the grace of God I met Mike Abernathy. Both him and his partner Max Gotcher really helped me turn my practice around. From the time I met them I was producing probably $30,000 a month, and within six months to maybe a year I was producing and collecting $80 – 85,000 a month. Subsequent to that I’ve kept it at that level or better. Their principles are so sound and they’ll show you everything from technique to business principles to how to market your practice, how your staff should run; they really have an all-encompassing practice solution and I would highly recommend them to anybody.
I’m Dr. Joe Trammell from Franklin, Tennessee which is about 15 miles south of Nashville in middle Tennessee. My first experience with Summit Management, the first call with Max Gotcher, we were in the process of trying to find a new dentist to come in to go to work with me. I’d already been through one associate who decided not to buy in. We tried to acclimate a new dentist in and probably the best thing that Max and Mike both did was what I call the ‘Good Cop, Bad Cop.’ They got us both on phones and talked to us about the positives for me, the positives for Dr. Chad, the new dentist that came in, and actually set up the idea of the buy in over a long period of time. Just about three months ago Dr. Chad bought in fully as a 50% partner.
Max was always real good about coming in, and Max was always real good about being able to be captured on the phone or by email, very quick to respond. A good thing about Summit is they actually come in and do visits once a month. We stopped probably three or four years ago but we only did that just because we thought everything was kind of running pretty well. I can still call Max, still email him, still ask him questions and that’s where we are with Summit Management. I’d recommend you talk to them, they’re very inexpensive relative to a lot of the other places that people will seek out, but like I said you’ll just like the customer service that you’ll get with both Mike and Max.
I guess probably the biggest thing about the measurable results is just everything started working a lot better. We have a real big hygiene program and I guess that was one of the perils we had when Max first started. We had about a two or three hygienist practice going on at the time, we now have five or six part time hygienists now and there are at least four to five hygiene days every day in the office now. Building the hygiene practice was probably the biggest thing that Summit helped us with.
