Profound Gel is incredible. I’ve been using this formulation for about 4 years. It took the place of EMLA as a profound topical. With a mixture of Lidocaine, Prilocaine, and Tetracaine, it can be used in a variety of situations:
- As a normal topical. Unlike EMLA, Profound gel tastes great, at least for the first 2 seconds. After that you can’t feel anything or taste anything. Place this for a minute or two before injections and they won’t feel a thing.
- Use it on loose deciduous teeth for extraction. You usually will not need to numb.
- Use it as a topical prior to using Intraflow, X-tip, or Stabident. This is about all the anesthesia we currently use. We no longer use blocks for our operative.
- Hygienist: Use as a topical for root planning and curettage. We load it in a centrix syringe with a blunt or felt tip and squirt around the teeth for profound anesthesia. It will take about 5 minutes to numb the teeth and gums for 20 minute duration.
